On Saturday, March 16th, 2013: Friends in Sight participated in a health faire conducted by the Sai Baba Organization, Region 8. We departed our Hemet staging area at 4:30am and Yucaipa at 5:00am. By 6:00am we had arrived at the screening location and began to set up for the day.
The vision-screening component began at 8:30am and the last patient of the day was leaving with their recycled eyeglasses at 4:00pm. Listed below is a synopsis of the day's vision screening findings:
- 513 patients were seen for the day.
- Of the 513, 36 needed no prescription, 22 need to be made at the optical lab and 455 received recycled eyeglasses.
- 3 patients need cataract surgery on at least one eye.
- 15 patients need assessment/treatment for glaucoma.
- 3 patients need LPI's for narrow anterior chamber angles.
- 1 patient needs treatment for a bacterial conjunctivitis.
- 2 patients need surgical treatment for strabismus.
- 3 patients need surgical treatment for a pterygium on at least one eye.
- 1 patient needs a diabetic retinal exam for diabetic retinopathy.
- 1 patient needs a penetrating keratoplasty for a dense corneal scar.
- 1 patient needs a dilated fundus examination for floaters/flashes.
- 1 patient needs further assessment for other retinal lesions and visual field loss.
- 1 patient needs further assessment for a pigmented optic nerve head lesion.
By 4:50pm we had the equipment and eyeglass racks repacked. We said our good-byes and departed for the Yucaipa and Hemet staging areas. We arrived in Yucaipa at 5:50pm and Hemet 30 minutes later.
